Experience the Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement

Join us for a unique opportunity to explore the history of the Civil Rights Movement. You’ll visit significant landmarks and hear firsthand accounts from those who were directly involved, gaining valuable insight into the efforts that led to meaningful change. This trip focuses on the ongoing fight for justice. Join us to connect with history, gain new perspectives, and leave inspired to be part of the change.

Trip Highlights:

  • Meet legendary activists who marched alongside Dr. King and fought for justice.
  • Stand on the Edmund Pettus Bridge, where brave activists risked everything for equality; and where history was made during the Selma to Montgomery march.
  • Explore the Equal Justice Initiative, connecting past struggles to today’s fight for civil rights.

Registration & Payment Details

The cost of the trip is $2150.00. Once the minimum number of participants is reached, you will be contacted for payment.

The deadline to register and pay in full is June 30.

Once we reach 20 participants, we will contact you to complete your payment by check or credit card.

Please do not book airfare until we confirm we’ve met the minimum number of travelers.

Important: Payments are non-refundable, so we highly recommend purchasing travel insurance.

There is a minimum age requirement of 18.

About the trip leaders:

Robin Shaevel is the Adult & Travel Program Coordinator for Newton Community Education (NCE), and previously served as the Middle & High School Program Coordinator for NCE Kids. She holds a Master’s Degree in Fine Arts from Loyola Marymount University and graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School of Public Communications and Maxwell School of Citizenship.

Before joining NCE, Robin worked at CNN in Atlanta, Los Angeles, and Boston. A longtime Newton resident, she raised her three children here and deeply values the sense of community. Robin loves working in the Newton schools, where she can be surrounded by all the fun and excitement.

Beyond NCE, Robin enjoys all activities outdoors like hiking, biking, running, swimming, and skiing. She is also an avid traveler and captures her experiences through photography. Robin especially loves spending time with her big Bernedoodle, Olive, on their walks in Vermont.


Billy Planer is the Founder and Director of Etgar 36. He developed Etgar 36 after 20 years of leading synagogue youth programs and educating young people. He has led numerous trips around America and abroad. Billy graduated with a degree in Psychology and Advertising from Syracuse University and received a Master’s in Counseling from the school of Education at Georgia State University. He is from Atlanta and enjoys live music, travel, trying new restaurants, and sports.
